Haemolytic anaemia of mechanical origin after open heart surgery.

چکیده
A.A., a man aged 25 years, was found to have a cardiac murmur at the age of 8 years, but he had led a normal active life and has experienced no symptoms of cardiac origin. However, when examined in September, 1960, his heart was found to be moderately enlarged and there was evidence of left ventricular hypertrophy. An electrocardiogram showed a prolonged P-R interval, right bundle-branch block, and left axis deviation. Cardiac catheterization studies revealed a left-toright shunt, mainly at ventricular level; the pulmonary: systemic flow ratio was estimated to be 2.8: 1, with normal pulmonary arteriolar resistance. A ventricular septal defect, probably accompanied by an atrial septal defect, was diagnosed and it was decided that an operation for the repair of the defect was desirable. The patient's general health was good; in particular his blood picture was normal (haemoglobin, 15.1 g. per 100 ml., leucocytes, 5,000 per c.mm., and erythrocytes normal in appearance).

Mechanical haemolytic anaemia after valve repair operations for non-rheumatic mitral regurgitation.
Two cases are described in which severe mechanical haemolytic anaemia developed shortly after operation for repair of non-rheumatic mitral regurgitation. One patient had a "floppy" valve and the other cleft mitral leaflets, and both had chordal rupture. In both there was residual regurgitation after repair though in one this was initially only trivial. Clinically manifest haemolysis ceased afte...
متن کاملHaemolytic anaemia due to stenosed double-reinforced grafts after surgical repaired aortic dissection.
Haemolytic anaemia due to a stenosed graft is a rare complication after surgery for aortic dissection. We present the case of a patient with haemolytic anaemia and heart failure, who had undergone emergent ascending aorta replacement for type A acute aortic dissection 5 years earlier. Chest computed tomography revealed severe graft stenosis of the proximal anastomosis and transthoracic echocard...
متن کاملChronic haemolytic anaemia in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
A patient with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy was found to have a chronic intravascular haemolytic anaemia. After investigation this was attributed to the abnormal haemodynamics of the cardiac disease. Treatment with propranolol was associated with an improvement in the anaemia. No further cases of haemolytic anaemia were found in 37 other patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. It is concluded...
متن کاملRed blood cell abnormalities in cardiac valvular disease.
Nineteen patients with morphological abnormalities of the red blood cells are described, and these formed approximately 3% of the total cases of cardiac valvular disease. In two patients the abnormal blood film developed after the insertion of an aortic and mitral valve prosthesis respectively, but in another two patients the abnormal blood film was corrected by aortic valve surgery. Anisopoiki...
